LA SEMAINE DU 12 MARS
This is our last week before spring break.
A reminder that students need to review their vocabulary from the last 5 weeks. Topics include:
• Pink shirt day
• Les jeux Olympiques
• Verbe "ir" et "er"
• Carnaval du Québec
We will practice the vocabulary this week with a game however Thursday or Friday students will be assessed more formally.
Last week , we started a small research project for Social Studies called: "Personnes célèbre des Premières nations, des Métis et des Inuits du Canada". Students have been asked to identify and assess the significance of First Nation individuals who have contributed to Canada. The final copy of this project is due at the end of this week.
We have worked really hard on Science Projects last week to have them ready this Tuesday’s presentation of learning (1:15-2:35pm in our GYM ( we hope you will be able to come).
This Monday students will present to each other starting first thing Monday morning and to you on Tuesday. You might also see tiny home designs, birdhouses or puppets on display by our students.
A reminder that I am available for anyone to meet on Wednesday afternoon from 1:45 to 4:30 if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s learning.
On going communication
This week instead of a report card, students will receive a package with a summary from FRESHGRADE of where your child is at (emerging, developing or applying) and strengths/goals for:
Science
Applied Design
Arts Education
Physical and Health Education
The information in the rest of the package is written evidence of your child’s recent learning in the form of teacher and student assessments. Please review the documents and take the time to discuss with your child their learning. Please also look at your child’s SEESAW account to see examples of their oral abilities, photos, videos that add to the examples of learning.
You will be receiving information on Social Studies and Career Education in April. Please email me if you would like to request any grades.
A head’s up that our class will be participating in the upcoming speeches program for intermediate students, starting after Spring Break. We will send a package home at the end of this week outlining the process, the timeline and the rubric so students can consider topics and come back to school with something in mind after Spring Break. Speeches for French Immersion students at our school will be bilingual, with visuals and vocabulary chosen specifically to help anglophone audience members understand. It would be helpful for your child to have a gmail address so that I can help with editing online during the process so, if you are amenable, now might be a good time to discuss with your child the etiquette of email and help them establish an address (the google platform is helpful but not necessary).
Over spring break students are encouraged to continue practicing their French. Students can go to
http://ici.radio-canada.ca/jeunesse/scolaire
to watch cool videos in French, read blogs and play games.

Last week we practiced for our Reading Link Challenge with Kaley O'Brien from Whistler Public Library. Students did a great job answering questions and are encouraged to continue reading their English books. This Thursday, March 1 from 10:35 to 11:45, is the school challenge and it takes place in the GYM. Parents are welcome to cheer their child's team on and don't forget to encourage them to read as much as they can to help out their team. The following Tuesday, March 6 is the final reading link challenge that takes place in the public library. ( Buses will leave at 8:30 and return by 10:30) Field trip forms have been sent home. They’re blue. Please sign and return next week.
Starting in January, Mme Millen and I collaborated to give students an opportunity for variety and choice in a Genius Hour Science project. Students got to choose what and with who they studied. Our students have been learning about all sorts of things and have been working hard. We’ve ordered display boards and we have only 3 more hours over the next 2 weeks for students to clarify all they’ve learned, type it or handwrite the good copy, choose images, graphs and/or experiments to display, create movies, models or images and stick it all onto their display panels. We encourage you to support your child at home by discussing their project and helping them clarify what they might share with their audience. Here are tons of information for students on my website at: http://zlechien.weebly.com/sciences---lheure-de-geacutenie.html Scroll down to Step 5 to see our expectations for the student display board. We also hope you’ll come and see all the displays during our school’s Presentations of Learning on Wednesday, March 13, from 1:05 to 2:35 in our classrooms.
Grade 6 field trip to see the Whistler Secondary student production “School of Rock” this Friday, March 2nd. A parent chaperone is needed. Please let me know if you can help with this. (This is a great field trip as you get to see the WSS show for free!). Field trip forms will come home on Tuesday. Our grade 6s will be supervised by another Spring Creek teacher as there isn’t room for all the grade 5s to attend.

LA SEMAINE DU 11 DÉCEMBRE
2 weeks left before our WINTER holidays!
Last Wednesday, students had a fabulous time on our field to Crêpe Montagne, the Whistler Museum where they participated in a French scavenger hunt and the Whistler library. Next, Wednesday (Dec 20), we will be going to Meadow Park for the day - swimming and ice-skating. I will be sending out permission forms sometime this week.
This week students need to finish their Science project. For this project students needed to work with a partner to create their own science experiments and write up the method of inquiry using the scientific method.
Students were encouraged to select a science experiment from the website: "LES DÉBROUILLARDS". Last week, students needed to watch a FRENCH video and write up the scientific method for their experiment. This week students need to bring in the materials they need, practice doing the experiment at school and record doing/explaining the experiment on Seesaw. Next week, students will be presenting their experiments to the whole class. Click here for the science RUBRIC for this project.
For Social Studies, students need to finish creating their iMovie by the end of this week. Click here for the RUBRIC.
The winter show is this Wednesday at 6:30 pm but doors open at 6 pm. Students need to practice their French song: Vive le vent. Click here for the lyrics and song.
Don't forget that Santa's workshop is this Friday (bring a few loonies or toonies).
We will be doing a Secret Santa exchange the last week of school. Students will randomly pick a students which they can make or buy a gift for. Gifts should not exceed $10.
