LA SEMAINE DU 12 JUIN
KEEP CALM 3 more weeks left of school!
This week students will be given a DESIGN CHALLENGE. I have asked the teachers and staff at our school to submit a problem they have in their classroom that requires a design solution. Students will work collaboratively for the next 2 weeks to interview the teacher or staff member, find a design solution and create a 3D design on tinkercad. Worthy designs will be printed using our 3D printers. I am hoping that this activity engages students more deeply in the engineering process and will allow students to transform problems into growth opportunities. Throughout this project, I am hoping that students learn to contribute more and become engaged community learners.
Last week during our walking field trip up "Tunnel Vision", students learnt in French about the 10 essentials, being bear smart and how to use a small camping stove. This week students will be put into teams and will create a menu for our Iron chef challenge that will take place during our Pemberton hike on Monday, July 26.
Our last French project is called "La où je dors". Students will use iMovie to put together a film about where they live, their bedroom and passions. The criteria and timeline for this project can be found here.
This week's French vocabulary is on camping and hiking. The vocabulary challenge will take place next week on Wednesday, July 21.

We have a busy week ahead. This week Track and Field starts. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1:35 to 2:35 all intermediate students will be taking part our Track and Field practices.
This Friday students will have a quiz on "Les parties du corps". French vocabulary packages are also due at the end of this week. Click here to review your vocabulary words.
This is the last week to prepare for our annual Spring Creek Speeches. Since it is Canada's 150th year, our main theme for the speeches this year is “What does Canada mean to me?” This may include the rights and freedoms we enjoy as Canadians, what makes us Canadian/our identity, our story (both the successes and mistakes/failures), how we have changed, and possibly the change you would like to continue to see in our country as we move forward in the future. Class presentations will take place at the end of this week and 2 students will be presenting in the gym to the whole school next Thursday, May 11. Speeches need to be both in English and French (half and half).
Last Wednesday, we had a presentation from the RMOW on local government and what it does. Our grade 5s will be participating in a contest for mayor of the day (or councillor). Major of the day applications are due this Friday, May 5.
We have started Student Vote étudiant where “students learn about government and the electoral process, research the parties and platforms, discuss relevant issues and cast ballots for the official election candidates. The results are shared with the media for broadcast and publication following the closing of the official polls.” On Monday, May 8, our students will vote on real ballots for the candidates in this riding, in a polling station we will set up in our school. I encourage you to discuss your opinions on politics and candidates with your child and to take your child with you to the polling stations on voting day, May 9.

Last Friday our school committed to picking up garbage in our neighbourhood as a gesture of respect for Earth Day. Our class did a great job and collected tones of trash along the valley trail to Bayshores. Well done!
I hope that some of you were able to attend the FUNPAC fundraiser last Friday. This was the PAC's major fundraiser of the year and it will help raise money to support technology in our school, as well as guest speakers, field trips, special presentations to students and parents throughout the year.

This Thursday students will have a quiz on er and ir verbes in the present tense. This week's vocabulary is on Body parts and there will be a collaborative vocabulary challenge on Friday. Click here to review this and last week's vocabulary words.
For social studies, we have started a new topic on the Canadian government. We will be focusing two big ideas: 1) how Canadian institutions and government reflect the challenge of our regional diversity and 2) how different Systems of government vary in their respect for human rights and freedoms.
I have also signed up our class for the Student Vote project for the 2017 British Columbia provincial election which will take place on May 9. This project will allow students to have the opportunity to experience the voting process first hand and build the habits of active and engaged citizenship. Through classroom learning students will learn about government and the electoral process, research the issues, parties and candidates.
On Wednesday, April 27, we will have a presentation from the RMOW on local government and what it does. Our grade 5s will be participating in a contest for mayor of the day (or councillor).

Welcome back ! We had a great first week of school.
Last week students did another space walk but this time they shared their presentations with their peers. During their space walk students took notes about what they learnt about each planet and satellite. Later students were asked to collaboratively design a poster that answered the following question: "What is Earth's relationship with the rest of the universe?" This open ended question allowed student to think deeper and more critically.
This week students will record themselves in French answering our science question and post it on seesaw. Q:"What is Earth's relationship with the rest of the univers?"
There are still a few students that need to finish their art work on endangered animals.
There will be NO home reading this week.

Pink Shirt day - Wednesday, February 22
Last week students received their first package of on-going communication. Please take time to review your child’s learning, and our method of communicating their progress, sign it and then return the whole package by the end of this week. Please send me any feedback at [email protected]
This Wednesday is PINK SHIRT DAY and there will be a school wide assembly. Therefore this week we are exploring an anti-bullying theme. Students will collaboratively explore the following questions: What is a bully? How can we show compassion towards bullies? What is a bully victim? What can someone do if they are bullied? What is a bystander? In what ways can a bystander react? What is an ally? What can an ally do to help? Our French vocabulary for this week in on PINK SHIRT DAY. Don't forget to study the vocabulary words for our mini-quiz this Friday.
This week in Science we will continue to review the order of planets, differences between "des planètes telluriques and des planètes gazeuses" and how the universe was formed. Science visual Dictionaries are due this Friday February 24. Last week we began an activity to scale our solar system. A basketball represented the sun and students needed to calculate a reduced model for each planet. We used real life objects (cherry tomatoes, quinoa, peppercorns etc) to represent the reduced model of each planet. This week, in groups students will create a model of the solar system with these food objects and label them accordingly.
We will continue working on our art and French research project about endangered animals. Click here to see the criteria and expectations for this project. This week students will continue to prepare for their Winter Carnaval which will be presented to the kindergartens and grade 1s of École Passerelle this Thursday and Friday. Below are the hand outs students received last week to guide them while they are presenting their activity in French. Students should review, be able to say and understand the sentences.
(Click on groups in orange to see Handouts)

Les Guides: Tim, India, Sofia, Kou
Le Relais en traineau : Ossian, Sam, John, Maddy

Jayden & Georgia presenting to Mme Hennessey's class (after recess)
LA SEMAINE DU 17 JANVIER
Thanks to all the grade 6s and grade 5 franco-forts students for organizing and leading our first French Winter Carnaval "Le défi ultime". Thanks as well to all the parent volunteers who jumped right in, participated in our relay race and ran around with the students to different stations along the valley trail. We had such great fun and enjoyed eating some wonderful crêpes donated by Crêpe Montagne!
This week we have started to plan for our next "Carnaval" which we will present to the youngest students of École La Passerelle; all in French! Mme Millen and my students will be working in groups to organize this event. The event will take place next week on Thursday, January 26 between recess and lunch.
Immigration study – cultural object needed from home
To go with our Carnaval, we are starting a little unit on immigration and its effects on Canadian culture and identity. We will be looking at early immigration to Quebec, its impact on First Nations people, and the development of the French-Canadian identity. In order to start the discussion on culture, we request that each student bring in an object from their family that represents their culture. They will need to prepare 3 sentences to describe this object orally in French to a small group. The object and sentences will be presented this Friday morning.
Example: Voici _______________. C'est important pour moi parce que __________________________________ . C'est très spéciale car _________________________ . Je ….

LA SEMAINE DU 23 JANVIER
This week students will continue to prepare for their Winter Carnaval which will be presented to the kindergartens and grade 1s of École Passerelle this Thursday and Friday. We only get to work with La Passerelle students if we speak French at all times so it is really important that everyone learns these key phrases and refrains from speaking English during the activity. Below are the hand outs students received last week to guide them while they are presenting their activity in French. Students should review, be able to say and understand the sentences.
(Click on groups in orange to see Handouts)
Group 1 presenting on Thursday, January 26:
L’introduction: Tia et Lydia
Les Guides: Tim, India, Sofia, Kou
Le Relais en traineau : Ossian, Sam, John, Maddy
L’hockey : Samarra, Charlie B., Soren, Cedric
La pêche sur glace : Charlotte, Sarah, Carson, Jaetham
Bonhomme Carnaval: Lyla
Group 2 presenting on Friday, January 27:

Relais de sac à fève: Filipp, Lake, Dylan, Dyllon
Le soccer: Tyler, Archie, Georgia et Chaley
Le tour de calèche: Meghan, Teppei, Jenny, and Tyler T.

Mme Millen has also recorded herself saying some important phrases in English and French to help students prepare for the Carnaval.
mmemillen.weebly.com/recordings.html
(click on the first recording on her website)
Mme Kwiatkowski's Math students will have time to complete their Math pre-quiz on Tuesday, January 24 and we will correct it on Wednesday. The math quiz is this Thursday, January 26.
Don't forget that students will be tested on their French vocabulary words from the previous weeks this Friday, January 27. Topics include:

Yeah! We now have our subscription. This is an extensive non-fiction website with mini videos on all sorts of topics (like an encyclopedia in video). There are subtitles, so students can choose topics that interest them and practice their reading and learn new vocabulary in French. Our subscription includes access from home, so please encourage your child to listen to a show several times per week (daily would be great). They’re only 2-4 minutes long. Go to:

Je ….
Our vocabulary challenge will take place next week. Students have two weeks to review all vocabulary words!

LA SEMAINE DU 31 OCTOBRE
HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Our Social Studies project is progressing and this week we are going to cook! Last week we learned how to analyze and then adapt a recipe to make it more in line with the SLOW FOOD movement. Students will be adapting traditional French recipes to use local ingredients and healthy foods.
Parents will get to taste their results after they have perfected their recipes! We will let you know soon of our Food Fair date. Get ready to practice a little restaurant French when you come! (we’ll provide some training and cheat sheets too).
This project requires Collaboration and also Contributing by the students, which we have been discussing. Collaboration requires both sharing ideas and listening to others’ ideas, then using consensus to come to a decision. Another important part is asking for help when collaborating gets challenging.
