WHat my snowman did at night ... writing in French !

2/3/2016

With inspiration from their snowmen art and learning about the passé composé (past tense) students were able  to create a cute story about what their snowmen did during the night. Here students used the vocabulary and grammar we studied in class to build their sentences.

Big Idea : Develop and refine ideas, processes, and technical skills in art to improve the quality of artistic creations.
For this art project students  explored, and created art work using the image development strategies of point of view and magnification.
Step 1:
A group of students read the story “La vie secrète des bonhommes de neiges” to the class as part of a French oral presentation.
Step 2
Students practiced techniques of shading and drawing with pastel colours.
Step 3
Each student selected a page from the picture book and created a zoomed image in order to appreciate the detail and create a different point of view.

RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT THE NECESSITY OF UNSTRUCTURED PLAY

February 4, 2015, was the first annual Global School Play Day for students in schools around the world, grades Pre-K to 6 or ages 1-12. Grades 7-12 joined in, too!  In his TEDx lecture, Peter Gray clearly argues the case that today's kids do not grow up playing and this has negatively impacted them in many ways. It's time we return the gift of play to this generation.

Math - FOur fours CHallenge

 Big idea:
Numbers can be represented in many forms and reflect different relationships.

The objective of this Math challenge is for groups to use their knowledge of order of operations and a combination of four fours to create all the numbers from 1 to 40.     Students could use simple addition ("+"), subtraction ("−"), multiplication ("×"),  division ("÷"), and parentheses as well as more advanced operations that included  factorial ("!"), exponentiation and the square root ("√") operations.

Picture
Big idea:     Multicellular organisms have organ systems that enable them to survive  and interact within their environment.

To introduce our unit on Body Systems, students first explored the differences between living and non-living things.

Discussion questions:
  • What are some characteristics of living and non-living things ?
  • How are living things different from non-living things?
Students created a small poster to demonstrate these differences as well as explored the cell theory. Students needed to think critically to answer the question: Why is a candle/fire considered non-living?

The Daily Five is a literacy structure that allows for differentiation in the classroom and provides consistency.

Here two students are reading to each other in French and asking questions.
